Big Walk has full crossplay across every currently supported platform. Friends can connect through platform friend lists or a session-specific Join Code. The host keeps the save, there is no built-in matchmaking, and the complete game is not designed for solo play.

The Official Big Walk FAQ says players on different supported systems can play together. Xbox, PS4, and the original Nintendo Switch are absent from the matrix because Big Walk is not currently available on those platforms.
How to join a Big Walk game
- One player starts the session as host.
- Before launching, the host can read the Join Code in the corner of the host menu and share it privately.
- After the world loads, the same code is available from Session Details.
- Friends may also see the session through the current platform's friend system.
- Everyone else enters the Join Code and, if enabled, the host's password.
The code is generated for that session. Mac App Store players must use it because that edition does not support Game Center. The host can view or change the session password from Session Details after play begins.
A Big Walk Join Code is a temporary multiplayer session code, not a game key, gift code, or redeemable reward. A new code is generated whenever the host starts a session.
If the session cannot be found, first confirm that the host has actually entered the world. A Join Code is the most direct cross-platform fallback when a friend-list entry does not appear.
Join Code privacy and session visibility
Anyone who obtains the Join Code can attempt to join. Use a password for a private group, do not show either value during a stream or public screen share, and change the password from Session Details if it has been exposed.
Friend visibility can extend beyond the host's direct contacts: the session may also appear to friends of other connected players. A password is therefore the dependable privacy control for a closed session.
Saves and host ownership
The host owns the group's save and Big Walk records progress automatically. The host must start each later session before other players can connect. If the host leaves, everyone else is disconnected. Continuing from the same save therefore requires the same person to host again.
Official guidance provides no shared-save or host-transfer workflow; continuing normally requires the original host. Choose a dependable host before the group invests several sessions in one adventure.
Player count and world setup
Big Walk supports a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 online players. When opening a new session, the host chooses a 2-player, 3-player, or 4-plus-player version of the world. That selection changes some parts of the adventure and represents the expected minimum group size, not the maximum session capacity.
| Mode | Official status |
|---|---|
| Online co-op | Supported for 2–12 players |
| Cross-platform multiplayer | Supported |
| Complete single-player mode | Not supported |
| Built-in matchmaking | Not supported |
| Local or split-screen co-op | Not listed as supported |
| Walking around alone | Technically possible, but meaningful progress is limited |
Official materials do not list local or split-screen co-op. Big Walk's cooperation is designed for online play through the built-in communication system, and Nintendo lists one player on one system with 2–12 players online.
What is the best group size?
House House says there is no single ideal number. A smaller party creates more focused cooperation; a group near the 12-player maximum becomes much more chaotic. The world setup is the host's planning choice, while the session limit remains 12.
For a continuing story run, prioritize a group that can return consistently over filling every slot. As a practical planning inference, choose the setup matching the minimum number expected to remain for the session; House House explicitly recommends selecting a lower setting when some players will leave early.
Voice and text chat
A microphone is optional. Big Walk includes both proximity voice chat and text chat, and the text system follows the same intentional distance and environmental restrictions. Messages and voices can fade with distance or be blocked by the world, while tools such as walkie-talkies change how communication works.
House House recommends using the built-in chat instead of a separate voice call because those restrictions are part of the puzzles and experience.
Can people play from the same room?
Multiple devices in separate rooms can work, but House House recommends that each player use the built-in chat rather than talking across one room. Open microphones can pick up another device's speakers and undermine the game's distance-based communication. Headphones and physical separation give the intended result.
Nintendo explicitly identifies one player on one system and 2–12 online. No official Big Walk store advertises split-screen or couch co-op for any edition.
Communication accessibility
Text chat can replace a microphone for the complete game. The host can also enable challenge skipping during session setup for barriers involving hearing or reading, speaking or typing, reaction speed, or fine motor control. See the review briefing's accessibility section for the wider option list.
Version compatibility
Big Walk version numbers contain three parts. Under the official compatibility rule, only the first two parts need to match. For example, versions 1.4.7 and 1.4.8 should remain compatible. That pairing is an explanation of the rule, not a separately published official test case.
Connection checklist
If a friend's session is missing:
- Add the host through the current platform's friends service.
- Use the Join Code instead.
- Remember that Mac App Store players must use a Join Code.
If connecting still fails:
- Confirm the host is already loaded into the world.
- Check that every device has a working internet connection.
- Verify each device's system clock is accurate.
- Confirm that the first two parts of the version number match.
- Close Big Walk completely, reopen it, and try again.
- Check connection warnings shown to the host.
- Pause network-heavy programs and devices.
- Prefer a wired connection where practical.

Multiplayer FAQ
Does Big Walk have crossplay?
Yes. Players on Windows, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 can play together.
How many people can play Big Walk?
Big Walk supports 2–12 online players. The host's 2-player, 3-player, or 4-plus world selection is an expected minimum group size rather than the session maximum.
Can you play Big Walk solo?
There is no complete single-player mode. One person can start a session and walk around, but the official FAQ says meaningful progress requires cooperative teamwork.
Does Big Walk have matchmaking?
No. There is no built-in matchmaking. Players need to organize their own group, which fits the game's long-form structure across multiple sessions.
Do I need a microphone?
No. The full game can be played with in-game text chat. Text follows the same distance and environmental restrictions as voice chat.
Who keeps the group's progress?
The host keeps the save, and progress is saved automatically. The same host must start future sessions to continue that save.
Where does the host find the Join Code?
It appears in the corner of the host menu before launching the world. After launch, open Session Details to see it again or manage the password.
Can strangers join with a leaked code?
Anyone with the code can attempt to join, and friends-of-friends may see a visible session. Protect a private game with a password and change it if the details have been shared publicly.
Can two people play on one console or computer?
Nintendo explicitly lists one player on one system. No official Big Walk listing advertises split-screen or local co-op for any edition; 2–12-player sessions are documented as online play.
